In most of the world, mask mandates are gone: public spaces, shops, restaurants, and general indoor venues no longer require them, and fines for non-compliance have disappeared along with the rules. Public transport requirements, once the last holdout, have also been dropped almost everywhere.
The main places you may still encounter requirements or strong expectations are healthcare settings, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies in some countries, and care homes, where masks can still be required either by regulation or by the facility's own policy, especially during winter respiratory seasons. Individual businesses anywhere retain the right to ask, and temporary rules can return locally during outbreaks.
Cultural norms are a separate layer worth respecting: in parts of East and Southeast Asia, masking when you yourself have a cough or cold was normal long before the pandemic and remains common courtesy, so plenty of people mask voluntarily. Tossing a couple of masks in your bag costs nothing and covers the hospital visit or the seatmate situation.
