Skimming exists everywhere but the risk is very unevenly distributed. The dodgy machines are typically standalone ATMs in tourist nightlife zones, unattended locations, and independent operators; ATMs inside bank branches, behind lobby doors, or in busy supermarkets are far safer because tampering is harder and noticed faster.
The protective habits are simple and worth making automatic. Give the card slot and keypad a quick wiggle; skimmer overlays are often loosely attached. Always cover your PIN with your other hand, since most skimming operations rely on a pinhole camera to capture it. Prefer contactless or mobile-wallet payments where possible, as they don't expose your card number the way a swipe does. At restaurants in some countries, cards are taken away from the table, so a card with a low limit or instant transaction notifications is your friend.
Enable those notifications before you travel, know how to freeze the card instantly in your banking app, and carry a second card stored separately.
