Consistency beats intensity. A short weekly video call at a fixed time does more for closeness than occasional marathon catch-ups, because everyone knows when they will next talk and small everyday news gets shared before it goes stale.
Beyond calls, shared activities work wonders: watching the same series and discussing it, playing online games with siblings, a family group chat for photos of meals and small moments, or streaming a festival celebration so you are virtually present. Grandparents especially love a regular video call routine with kids, even ten minutes.
Visits need planning too. Try to be home for at least one major occasion a year if budget allows, and encourage family to visit you so they can picture your life there; it changes the relationship when they have seen your kitchen and your street. Also remember important dates religiously; a call on a birthday or anniversary carries huge weight when you are far away.
