Every workplace and community has unwritten norms layered on top of the official rules, such as which safety practices are taken deadly seriously and which exist mostly on paper. Locals know the difference; your job in the first weeks is to learn it from them without absorbing their bad habits.
Practically, do the official induction properly, then find a trusted colleague or neighbour and ask direct questions. What do people actually do in a fire alarm? How do you call an ambulance and who pays? Is that intersection as dangerous as it looks? People are usually happy to explain, and asking signals that you take the place seriously.
Also read the environment itself. Signage, road behaviour, and how strictly rules like helmet or seatbelt laws are followed tell you a lot. Adapt to local conditions, but keep your own minimum standards where the local norm is genuinely unsafe.
